The story behind Spice Is Life

Jean-Pierre Moreau
Chef, Teacher & Lover of French Cuisine
I grew up in Lyon, the gastronomic capital of France, where my grandmother taught me that cooking is not just about feeding the body β it's about nourishing the soul. Those early mornings in her kitchen, watching her transform simple ingredients into extraordinary meals, shaped everything I would become.
At 18, I enrolled at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, where I studied under some of the most respected chefs in French cuisine. After graduating with honours, I spent a decade working in Michelin-starred restaurants across France, including Le Bernardin in Paris and Paul Bocuse in Lyon.
In 2005, I moved to London to open my own restaurant, La Maison Moreau, which earned a Michelin star within its first two years. For fifteen years, I had the privilege of sharing classical French cooking with discerning diners from around the world.
Now, I've turned my attention to something equally important: passing on these traditions to home cooks. Through Spice Is Life, I share the recipes, techniques, and secrets that have been handed down through generations of French cooks. My goal is simple β to show that with patience, quality ingredients, and a little guidance, anyone can create restaurant-quality French dishes in their own kitchen.
Every recipe on this blog has been tested dozens of times, refined to work in a home kitchen, and written with clear, step-by-step instructions. I believe that cooking should be a joy, not a chore β and that the best meals are made with love, shared with family and friends.

My Philosophy
Quality Ingredients
The best French cooking starts with the best ingredients. Fresh, seasonal, and locally sourced whenever possible.
Time-Honoured Techniques
Classical French techniques have stood the test of time for good reason. Master the fundamentals and everything else follows.
Cooking with Love
Food made with care and attention tastes better. Take your time, enjoy the process, and share the results with those you love.
